FILIPINO rowers bagged three gold, six silver and four bronze medals in the 12th Southeast Asian Rowing Championship and Indoor Rowing Championship recently in Chonburi Province, Thailand.
Alvin Amposta and Nida Cordova led the Filipino charge by winning the men’s and women’s singles 200-meter events, respectively.

Cordova timed 7:44.1, edging out Vietnam’s Pham Thi Hai (7:54.4) and Thailand’s Urailak Rongsak (8:23.4).
The third Philippine gold was courtesy of Roque Abala, who ruled the junior men’s singles 1,000 meters in the indoor rowing event.
The 17-year-old Abala beat Thai Komaraphat Buabal (3:21.3) and Indonesian Johanes Nenkeula (3:21.9).
“Maganda ang ipinakita ng mga manlalaro natin lalo na ang mga junior athletes. They showed character and readiness to compete against their veteran counterparts,” said national coach Nick Jasmin.
The Philippines finished in second place in the junior women’s singles 1,000 m, open women’s relay, mixed relay 4×500, junior women’s singles scull, women’s single scull, lightweight men’s double sculls.
The locals wound up third in Open men’s relay, open women’s singles 500 m, lightweight women’s doubles scull and lightweight men’s four.
Up next for the Filipino paddlers is the Asian Rowing Championships in Chinese Taipei from November 1 to 9.
